Taking a copy of Copperopolis back to Oxwich beach
I took a copy of Copperopolis back to Oxwich beach where the story began.
John Clement grew up in Oxwich Green on one cliff. He would come to the beach to watch out for ships returning to Swansea docks.
Margaret Morris, who lived in Penmaen (the other cliff) would ride here in the mornings. According to family lore, she encountered John here and was rather taken by his beautiful blue eyes.
An important incident, as otherwise I would not be here and Copperopolis would not have been written.
After John and Margaret were married and he became a Master mariner, she did sail with him pas this same beach.
But when he chose to sail to Chile round Cape Horn for the copper trade, she could not accompany him.
Back home in. Swansea, she made some disquieting discoveries about the human cost of the copper boom…
